Soccket, a soccer ball that converts kinetic energy into electricity, and that has been called "exactly what America needs" by the former director of the US Patent Office, is about to hit retail markets, should it reach its funding target on Kickstarter. The Soccket has been in development over the past four years by New York startup Uncharted Play. The concept of the product is that as the ball is kicked about, energy is generated by a pendulum-like mechanism inside the ball. This energy is sorted and converted, within the ball, to provide a power supply to a small USB or LED charger. The energy can then be used to charge an LED lamp for example, which the company claims could run for three hours after just 30 minutes of play with the Soccket.
